You’ve always wanted to be in a play. It looks like everyone is having such a good time. But you worry about the long rehearsal period. You worry you couldn’t learn all those lines. Well, worry no more!  The North Street Playhouse is excited to announce “The Women Project” in January, an opportunity to ‘do theatre’ without the long term commitment.  Throughout 2010, the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the Virginia Tourism Commission are joining in an initiative titled Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts.  As part of the Playhouse’s participation in the year long recognition, “The Women Project” is open to women of all ages and experience levels and will consist of a ‘crash course’ in theatre and a production at the North Street Playhouse.

“The Women,” a classic American comedy of manners and marriage, debuted on Broadway in 1936. While the story line is fairly simple- a loving wife, a cheating husband, and a sultry temptress- the vast and varied array of female characters as written by Claire Booth Luce made the play an award winner, and the large all female cast playing thirty-five characters made it something of a novelty.  It became a hit movie in 1939, featuring all of Hollywood’s brightest stars of the day, and has been remade at least twice, most recently in 2008, featuring, among others, Meg Ryan and Jada Pinkett-Smith..

“The Women Project” will take place over a two week period between May 24 & June 6, 2010 and will include acting and production workshops, culminating in staged readings of the “The Women” as a part of The Playhouse Studio Series. No experience or audition is required. For more information and to register, call 787-2050 or 1-866-70-DRAMA (703-7262) or e-mail nspinfo@verizon.net.
