Virginia can claim many ‘firsts’ in the history of the U.S., not the least of which is the first state supported theatre in the
country- the Barter Theatre located at the far western tip of the state in Abingdon. But there’s more. The Eastern Shore is
acknowledged as the site of the first English language theatre performance in the new country, at Fowkes Tavern in
Pungoteague, on August 27, 1665. According to the Circuit Court records for Accomack County, charges were brought against
three men in conjunction with a performance of a play entitled “Ye Bare and Ye Cubbe.” As a result, the men were ordered to
answer the charges by performing the piece for the Court at its next session, also held at the same Pungoteague tavern. Little
more is known, though much has been speculated as to the content of the play, the meaning of the title and the various
participants. We are very pleased to have received a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts to commission and
develop a script based on this important historic event and even more pleased to announce that Cartland Berge, a native of the
Shore, will be the author. Cartland has worked with us for several years in a variety of capacities. He is a recent graduate of the
University of N.C. at Greensboro with a major in technical theatre. He currently lives and works in theatre in New York.
